JOHNSTON COUNTY, Okla. (KTEN) — The risk of dangerous wildfires remains elevated across much of Texoma.

One example: The Wednesday’s grass fire at Mill Creek. The Tishomingo Fire Department got the call at 1:30 p.m.; it took TFD and eight other agencies 10-and-a-half hours to extinguish, charring 572 acres in the process.

The KTEN viewing area will remain under elevated fire danger through the weekend, and according to Johnston County Emergency Management director Jason Bryant, taking the proper precautions is the key to safety.

“Always try to check for wind changes… if the wind’s going to pick up or change directions,” he advised.

And make sure to keep the fire department in the loop.

“We request that people contact our dispatch and notify them if you’re going to do a controlled burn,” Bryant added.
