A huge hydroelectric project in the Southeast that’s been decades in the making just got some serious funding. The Thayer Creek Hydro project is planned in the Admiralty Island community of Angoon. It was just awarded almost $27 million in federal funding. The project involves constructing a run-of-river hydropower facility on Thayer Creek to replace the use of costly diesel generators.

More daylight in our far north means being able to see more and sometimes, that means seeing polar bears. Special cameras operated by the UAF Geophysical Institute recently caught some polar bears visiting a U.S. Department of Energy research facility in Utqiagvik, where there are now about 10 hours of daylight each day.
