Goats die in rural Dakota City house, barn fire [Video]

DAKOTA CITY — Four goats died in a fire that destroyed a rural Dakota City house and barn Thursday.

Firefighters were dispatched to 1488 Lake Ave. at 8:24 a.m.

South Sioux City fire chief Doug Koopman, whose department responded to a mutual aid request, said the barn was engulfed in flames and had collapsed by the time the first truck arrived on scene, and, because of radiant heat and wind, the side of the house had caught fire.

Koopman said every room in the house had fire and smoke damage and was considered a total loss. Farm equipment stored in the barn was destroyed in addition to the loss of the goats.

The cause of the fire, which started in the barn, is undetermined, Koopman said.
