ASHLAND, Ore. — Ashland students and state climate leaders have sent a letter to the Ashland City Council.

It voices their support for lessening fossil fuel use in the city.

The letter was presented to the Ashland City Council by representatives from Ashland Youth for Electrification.

“This makes me really disappointed,” said Kiera Retiz, a third-year at Ashland High School. “(Fossil fuels need to decrease) as soon as possible.”

In the letter, the students ask for several changes, including:

  • A low nitrogen oxides emissions standard to limit indoor pollution.
  • A pollution fee for hooking up new homes to a gas line.
  • An end to the construction of new gas lines along public streets.
  • Reducing fossil fuels in existing homes .
