Alabama Power demolishing first steam plant in Gadsden [Video]

GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – Happening Saturday, Alabama Power will demolish the first steam plant the company ever built. Officials say it’s a bittersweet moment because the steam plant in Gadsden changed so many lives.

Around 8:00 a.m., Alabama Power will demolish the plant in east Gadsden. Located behind the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Plant, the power plant serviced Goodyear from 1995-2020. As part of the company’s efforts to evolve generation sources to the most cost-effective energy mix for customers, it was an important part of the Gadsden regional economy for more than a century. This demolition will help pave the way for potential future redevelopment and reuse of the site.
