Mat-Su Borough officials say construction continues on the 45,000-square-foot new school in Palmer. It’s located right next to Pioneer Peak Elementary. It’s expected to be “substantially complete” by the end of this year and will serve over 2,800 students and their families.

The University of Alaska has received $20 million from the National Science Foundation to investigate the effects of climate on marine species in the Gulf of Alaska. Researchers will partner with the communities of Seldovia, Halibut Cove, Homer, Cordova, Valdez, Juneau, Haines and Klukwan. They’ll study the effects of climate change on coastal species and the well-being of the people and economies who rely on them.

The Unalaska Chapter of the Alaska State Firefighters Association wants to know what the community thinks about bringing back the Firefighters Ball or holding some kind of similar event. The association has posted an online survey to gather opinions on the idea.
