British Columbia Implements Ban on Level 3, 4, and 5 Autonomous Vehicles for Road Safety

For more hydrogen news: https://www.hydrogenfuelnews.com/featured-news/ British Columbia has recently implemented a regulation that prohibits the use of autonomous vehicles of Level 3, Level 4, and Level 5 on its roads. This ban, effective as of April 5, 2024, under the Motor Vehicle Act, does not affect Level 2 autonomous systems. It aims to safeguard vulnerable road users by restricting the use of fully autonomous vehicles without driver intervention, unless the province grants specific authorization.Violations can result in penalties ranging from a $320 fine and 3 driver penalty points to a maximum fine of $2,000 and six months in prison. Currently, Mercedes-Benz’s Drive Pilot is the only Level 3 system available, approved in California and Nevada, while BMW’s Personal Pilot L3, set for release this year in Germany on the 7-Series, represents another example of restricted Level 3 automation.
