Colorado Springs Utilities receives multi-million dollar grant [Video]

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Colorado Springs Utilities was awarded a grant for over $5 million Thursday. The grant, bestowed by the United States Department of Transportation and Pipeline Hazardous Material Safety Administration is to help the city improve their natural gas system.

On Thursday, officials hosted a press conference to talk about the significance of these upgrades. They explained the maintenance of these pipes is crucial for the community and environments welfare. Massoud Tahamtani, the Transportation Deputy Associate Administrator the U.S. Department of Transportation talked about what the consequences could be if service lines are not taken care of.

“These pipelines if they’re not maintained properly obviously we have leaks that can result in safety concerns for the (community), fatalities, injuries and then also the methane emission.”

As of right now there are about 8,000 individual service lines made out of bare steel in the city according to Utilities. …
