E-bike battery on wrong charger blamed for fire in Coventry apartment complex

A fire at a Coventry, Rhode Island, apartment complex that sent three people to the hospital was caused by an e-bike battery on an incompatible charger, the state fire marshal said.

Firefighters responded to Tiogue Avenue just after 9:30 p.m Monday.

Parts of the e-bike’s lithium-ion battery exploded onto the floor.

Fire Chief Frank Brown of Coventry’s Hopkins Hill Fire District said the battery had been charging for about six hours on the wrong charger.

(Editor’s note: Updates to clarify that state fire marshal said an e-bike was involved, not an e-scooter.)
