Nebraska county rejects permit for CO2 pipeline from Iowa [Video]

A county board in Nebraska rejected an application from an Iowa company seeking to build a carbon dioxide pipeline across the northeast corner of the state.

On a 3-0 vote Tuesday, the Stanton County Board of Commissioners denied Summit Carbon Solutions a conditional-use permit to lay a little more than 8 miles of pipeline in the county.

Commissioner Dennis Kment said too many questions remained unanswered about the safety of the pipeline, which seeks to carry carbon dioxide from about 30 ethanol plants across the Midwest to a sequestration site in North Dakota.

“I didn’t know enough about it to vote yes,” said Kment, who is in his 26th year on the board. “I have never dealt with carbon dioxide before, and we didn’t have all the information we needed to answer the questions about safety.”
