New EPA rule could limit Edisto River gas plants pollution [Video]

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCSC/AP) – New rules announced Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency would force power plants fueled by coal or natural gas to capture smokestack emissions or shut down.

This rule would affect the proposed gas-fired power plant on the Edisto River, requiring the plant to limit pollution. It would limit carbon pollution and protect communities from air and water pollution from gas and coal-fired power plants, which is one concern some have expressed about the potential Canadys power plant.

“This rule would apply to Canadys, which means that it would either get a lot more costly, or it will be able to run much less, so the plant will be less useful,” Southern Environmental Law Firm Senior Attorney Kate Mixson said. “The rule just underscores why this plant is a recipe for disaster for these utilities ratepayers, and why we think clean energy, technology are cheaper and less risky options.”
