Omaha teen sentenced after beating man to death with baseball bat [Video]

Shocking.

That was the word Douglas County District Court Judge Shelly Stratman used Wednesday to describe Joshua Hammond’s actions on Halloween 2022 when he beat Daniel Price to death outside Price’s home in North Omaha. Stratman sentenced the 16-year-old Hammond to a prison term from 44 to 55 years on Wednesday.

On that Halloween, the then-15-year-old Hammond and a group of fellow teenagers were trying to start a car that had been stolen. They discovered the car had a dead battery and stopped to fix it near the 62-year-old Price’s house by 38th and Hamilton Streets.

Prosecutor Jameson Cantwell described Prince as a kindhearted person who was “willing to give the shirt off his back to help anybody.” Prince saw the teens struggling to start the car, which he was not aware had been stolen, Cantwell said.
