Phoenix-area residents can get food delivered with driverless vehicle [Video]

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — There are some days when you may not feel like driving to Chick-fil-A or In-N-Out to grab your favorite grub, so you might decide to have it delivered. Now, that delivery vehicle might not even have a driver!

Beginning Wednesday, certain East Valley residents can order Uber Eats using Waymo, and have food from their favorite restaurants delivered in driverless cars.

So how does it work? When Uber Eats customers go to place an order, they’ll receive an in-app prompt that says, “Autonomous vehicles may deliver your order.” Customers can decline the option if they prefer someone to hand deliver the meal instead.

After placing the order, users will get a notification saying they’ve matched with a Waymo vehicle. Customers will receive instructions to open the trunk and grab their food when the car arrives.

Company officials say that to start, Waymo will be working with select restaurants in Chandler, Tempe, and Mesa, such as Princess Pita, Filiberto’s, and …
