Residents rally against proposed gas plant bill in Colleton County [Video]

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Some people in Colleton County want lawmakers to know that they fear the environmental impacts of a bill that would put a natural gas plant replacing the old coal ash plant on the Edisto River.

People in the small community of Canadys say they are still suffering from the coal ash impacts of the 1960s, and don’t want to add natural gas to the mix. They fear the air quality impacts, and what laying down the pipeline to transport the gas will look like.

Robby Maynor works for the Coastal Conservation League and also lives only a few miles from the plant. He says the 70-page bill is still missing some crucial information.
