LOS ANGELES (KNX) — California’s power grid manager extended a statewide Flex Alert into Thursday, urging residents to conserve electricity as a dangerous heat wave takes hold across the Golden State.
The California Independent System Operator issued the Flex Alert “due to high temperatures pushing up energy demand and tightening available power supplies.” The voluntary plea asks residents to cut back on electricity use during peak hours of 4 and 9 p.m. “when the grid is most stressed from higher demand and less solar energy,” to help reduce the strain.
“With excessive heat in the forecast across much of the state and the Western U.S., the grid operator is expecting high electricity demand, primarily from air conditioning use, and is calling for voluntary conservation steps to help balance supply and demand,” Calif. ISO said.
