Panasonic Energy initiated a 4 million-square-foot EV project in De Soto, Kansas, last year, marking one of the largest facilities of its kind in the U.S. Despite plans to transition to natural gas by the year’s end, Evergy, the utility provider, will continue burning coal at part of its Lawrence Energy Center until at least 2028 to meet energy demands, delaying the transition. To fund the necessary infrastructure for Panasonic’s electricity needs, Evergy intends to request a rate increase on residential customers’ energy bills in certain parts of Kansas, as The Kansas City Star reported.
