António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, called out fossil fuel companies for ‘kneecapping’ progress toward net-zero goals on June 15. He said that governments must remain committed to net-zero goals to avert climate disaster and that fossil fuel companies should start helping, instead of hindering, the energy transition.

‘Fossil fuel companies must also cease and desist influence peddling and legal threats designed to kneecap progress,’ Guteress said. ‘I’m thinking particularly of recent attempts to subvert net-zero alliances invoking antitrust legislations. Collective climate action does not violate antitrust. It upholds the public trust.’
This statement seems targeted at recent attempts by Republicans to stop companies from implementing policies and investments toward environment, social, and governance goals. They say that ‘woke’ companies might violate the U.S.’s antitrust regulations. According to the Federal Trade Commission, these laws are typically used to regulate mergers and acquisitions to prevent monopolies in the marketplace or to ‘promote vigorous competition and protect consumers from anticompetitive mergers and business practices.’
