20 students hospitalized after chemical exposure at Livingston high school [Video]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – Chemical exposure sent 20 students and a faculty member to the hospital after an universal power supply overheated at Livingston Academy last Friday, according to Overton County EMA.

On Friday, Livingston fire crews responded to the school due to an unusual odor, originally believed to be Freon. The school was evacuated as a precaution until the odor was identified.

About 50 people were checked out on the scene. Shortly after, 20 students and a faculty member were taken to local hospitals.

“The final result was a Universal Power Supply had overheated, and began off gassing Hydrogen vapors, Hydrogen vapors mimicked a Freon gas leak, in addition a new cleaning chemical had been utilized in one of the bathrooms and is believed to have mixed with the remanence of cleaning chemicals in the drains and on the floor producing an odor as well,” Overton County EMA said.
