He used historical newspaper articles from the Times Leader for his sources. He also used the Wilkes-Barre Record Newspaper. This was a great read, please check out the original article.

This is a crazy story. A “roadside bombing” in a sense took place locally, not in North Ireland, not in Syria, not in Iraq or Afghanistan, but in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania. It was way back in 1930 also, nearly 100 years ago. That’s what occurred in January 1930, when some thieves targeted a payroll narrow gauge mine locomotive and those riding on it in order to rob $35,000 that was on board. The Great Depression was in full swing & people were desperate. 2 men laid in wait in the woods along the rails, one man was the lookout, while the other was the “trigger” man. They had rigged 13 sticks of dynamite and 19 sticks in 2 separate blast sites in order to achieve the most destruction and mayhem possible. They were fully committed and meant business.

The 2 soon to be killers set up an improvised explosive device, that is a bomb (dynamite) that was being used for an unconventional reason. The dynamite was stolen from the local Truesdale Colliery and rigged via a wire lead with a simple battery initiator. It was “command detonated” meaning a person physically had to set off the device by hand. This was a true premeditated evil act. Surely, the bombers knew no one could survive almost 40 sticks of explosives going off in such close proximity & that this would be lethal.

Sure enough, they set off their daisy chain IEDs (daisy chain being 2 IEDs going off in separate blasts, but in close proximity to cause maximum carnage and confusion). Daisy chains are also insurance policies, just in case the first attack fails, the second won’t. 4 men were instantly killed with 2 being injured, 1 very seriously. The robbers didn’t even get the money in the end.

2 men were taken into custody. Both denied involvement in the evil act. Both were also convicted and subsequently executed near State College in the electric chair. Back then, if you were given the death penalty, you had a quick appeal process, if that didn’t work, you were usually killed within a year of being sentenced to death. Did they do it? Were they innocent or guilty? The anthracite coal region was a very hostile place at times. This is my first video on the labor violence that went hand in hand with the actual mining industry.

As always, thank you so much for watching. Please like & subscribe. I will be uploaded more such videos. Have a good day, evening or night depending on when you are watching this.
