Independent MP Zali Steggall says the reality is “affordable” nuclear energy for Australia “doesn’t exist”.
Opposition Energy Spokesman Ted O’Brien has said if Australia was open to nuclear, Liddell could be used to install four 300-megawatt small modular reactors or one 1.1 gigawatts larger reactor.
Queensland LNP MPS Colin Boyce, Phillip Thompson and Llew O’Brien have also backed the push to build nuclear power stations on existing coal plant sites.
“The reality is that it doesn’t exist for an affordable scale,” Ms Steggall told Sky News Australia.
“[Bridget McKenzie] acknowledged that what she wants really … they want a continue on existing fossil fuel energy sources for longer.”
