AI-driven race cars compete in Abu Dhabi 🏎️💻️

At the Yas Marina Circut in Abu Dhabi, UAE, motor racing with a difference is underway. The @autonomousracingleague Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League in UAE (A2RL) is a racing competition designed to accelerate AI and driverless technology, and possibly start a whole new sport.

While the cars look like ordinary racing cars, there’s a major difference: there is no space for a driver. Each car is completely driverless, driven by AI code developed by the eight university-affiliated teams, and a suite of lidar, radar, GPS and camera sensors sit where a driver would traditionally be.

Once the cars are on track there’s no human intervention from the teams. Instead, each car will make its own AI-derived decisions in real-time about how fast to go, when to brake, what racing line to take, when to overtake and what risks they’re willing to take, which may be higher or lower than human drivers.

It’s hoped the technology developed here may help accelerate AI technologies and driverless vehicles in the future.
