The Battle for Hasdeo Arand: Coal Mining vs. Conservation

‘#SaveHasdeoForest’ echoes across social media, yet many remain unaware of the battle brewing in Chhattisgarh. The forests of Hasdeo are called the lungs of India’s Chhattisgarh state. They provide a home to rich biodiversity, large tribal population and are a major migratory corridor for elephants. The human inhabitants, about 10,000 people from the Gond, Lohar, Oraon and other indigenous communities depend on these forests for their survival. But all of this is being sacrificed for a coal mining project.

At a time when we often hear that we must urgently transition from fossil fuels to renewables, the coal hotspot of India reminds us that the reality is very different.

Destroying a resource-rich forest for a mining project and displacing our own people, is this the definition of “development”? Can simple citizens match up against big and powerful players exploiting the planet’s natural resources? What can we learn from the thirteen-year-long fight in Chhattisgarh to save Hasdeo?
