More than a dozen cars carrying 116 tons of coal derailed in the Feather River Canyon Sunday morning.

BLAIRSDEN, Calif. – 116 tons of coals spilled into the Feather River Canyon during a train derailment in Plumas County.

It happened around 6:45 a.m. Sunday in the Middle Fork Feather River off Highway 70 in Blairsden. On Monday, crews were still working to clear coal and train cars, 15 cars derailed and 14 of them spilling coal. An excavator was used to try and tilt up one of the remaining train cars. 

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are working with Union Pacific to monitor the situation since the derailment is along a large waterway. Both agencies are looking into any possible effects the coal could have on the waterways, but this is an ongoing investigation.
