Congress again probes Richmond organ transplant group [Video]

Congress has opened a second investigation into the Richmond nonprofit that oversees organ transplantation in the United States. 

The House Energy and Commerce Committee announced last week that it would begin an inquiry into the United Network for Organ Sharing to ensure a new law that changes the operational structure of organ transplantation is properly implemented. 

The new probe is the latest government action regarding UNOS, which oversees a network of 56 organ procurement groups and 248 transplant centers. UNOS has faced years of criticism for its technology, lost organs and the failing members of the network. In 2022, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing announcing its findings. 

UNOS is cooperating with the House committee, a spokesperson for the nonprofit said Friday. In addition to the new investigation, two U.S. senators are calling for UNOS to release more details about a data breach that occurred last year.
