Dog tests positive for strep zoo at MCACC shelter in Mesa [Video]

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Every dog at an East Valley animal shelter is now receiving antibiotics after one dog tested positive for a severe respiratory illness.

One dog at at Maricopa County Animal Care and Control’s East Valley Animal Care Center tested positive for strep zoo, causing every other dog at the shelter to start receiving care.

All the shelter’s dogs are on antibiotics and doing well, including the dog that tested positive, an animal shelter spokesperson said.

Shelter staff will work to clean all affected areas of the facility, as well as MCACC’s Phoenix location.

The shelter will remain open for adoptions, and all adopted pets will be sent home with a week’s worth of medication. Staff said Strep zoo is mainly a concern for animal shelter environments, and it is safe to take dogs home.
