Tesla CEO Elon Musk has previously expressed strong views on hydrogen and hydrogen fuel cells.

The billionaire and electric vehicle magnate called hydrogen fuel cells “extremely silly” when the topic was brought up a few years ago in a conversation with reporters at the Automotive News World Congress.

“It’s just very difficult … to make hydrogen and store it and use it in a car,” Musk stated. “The best-case hydrogen fuel cell doesn’t win against the current case batteries, so then, obviously … it doesn’t make sense,” he continued later.

“That will become apparent in the next few years. There’s … no reason for us to have this debate, I’ve said … my piece on this, it will be super obvious as time goes by, I don’t know what more to say.”

Musk’s opinions don’t seem to have changed significantly—if at all—since he made those comments. He tweeted “fuel cells = fool sells” in June 2020 and “hydrogen fool sells make no sense” in July of the same year.

However, Elon Musk claimed he had working prototypes of a car with a water engine. Before we delve into the truthfulness of this news, we explore first how the water engine came to life.

Few tales in the annals of scientific innovation are as fascinating and mysterious as the one involving Stanley Meyer and his ground-breaking creation, the water-powered automobile. Meyer, an American inventor and businessman who was born in 1940, had a concept that appeared to go against the conventions around traditional energy sources. His ground-breaking work in the 1990s sought to use water’s potential as a clean, renewable fuel to completely transform the car industry. But there was disagreement and skepticism along the way.

Early in the 1980s, as worries about the depletion of fossil fuels and the damage to the environment grew, Stanley Meyer developed a curiosity about alternative energy sources. Meyer began his quest to create a water fuel cell that could electrolyze water molecules to produce hydrogen and oxygen because he was intrigued by the possibility of hydrogen as a plentiful and clean fuel.

Meyer made significant progress with a small device known as the water fuel cell. Water was split into its constituent elements, hydrogen, and oxygen, using electrical energy in this device. Meyer’s claim that the process needed little energy input, making it a highly effective and sustainable way to produce fuel, was the source of his invention’s genius.
