TRANSCRIPT
Scientists have devised a new self-extinguishing rechargeable #battery design to prevent fires and explosions from overheating.
The study outlines the replacement of the conventional flammable electrolyte with materials akin to those found in commercial fire extinguishers. By modifying affordable coolants, the researchers created a nonflammable, heat-resistant electrolyte compatible with all battery chemistries, offering enhanced safety.
Lab tests demonstrated the effectiveness of the new batteries across a wide temperature range and their ability to dissipate heat, extinguishing internal fires. Additionally, they successfully withstood the nail penetration test, simulating internal short circuits without igniting. Despite challenges like finding sustainable alternatives to expensive components, the researchers aim to improve battery safety and durability further.
