There are hazardous surf and strong wind warnings for large parts of the Australian east coast today.
The extreme conditions have been caused by a deep low-pressure system in the Southern Ocean to the south of Tasmania.
Seas to the south-east of Tasmania will reach heights of 10m to 12m, with most of this energy heading north towards New South Wales and south-east Queensland.
Early today a strong southerly wind change reached NSW that is forecast to cause treacherous sea conditions, including sudden, large waves and powerful surges of water.
Wave heights will increase rapidly behind this change, reaching 3m to 3.5m.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a hazardous surf warning for the Byron, Coffs, Macquarie, Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra, Batemans and Eden coasts for today and tomorrow.
