Hondas CEO “Our Soild State Battery Will Destroy The Entire Car Industry!”

In the revolutionary realm of solid-state batteries, we’ve bid farewell to the era of volatile liquids and gel polymer electrolytes. Honda has boldly stepped into the arena of solid-state batteries, adamantly proclaiming that the current battery technology is no longer a sustainable long-term solution. Criticisms against lithium-ion batteries, ranging from their weight to reliance on rare earth elements, quick decomposition, and environmental impact, have fueled Honda’s shift towards solid-state batteries.
Dave Gardner, the dynamic vice president of business and sales at Honda, recently engaged in a compelling conversation with Fidrive, emphasizing the company’s conviction that lithium-ion technology is ill-equipped to meet future demands. Honda’s research into solid-state batteries holds promise for creating smaller, lighter, and more resource-efficient batteries, boasting enhanced energy density, rapid charging, and extended lifespans.
A staggering $310 million investment by Honda in a state-of-the-art solid-state battery production line reflects their unwavering commitment to advancing this groundbreaking project. While Honda is making strides, Toyota has unveiled plans for solid-state batteries with a jaw-dropping 745-mile range, with ambitions to push it further to an astounding 900 miles.
The evolution driven by solid-state batteries is paramount, and Honda’s strategy to outshine Toyota in the race for cutting-edge EV technology isn’t surprising. Toyota’s heavy investment in solid-state batteries has caught Honda’s attention, prompting them to disclose a $310 million expenditure for a cutting-edge production line dedicated to testing this innovative technology.
Honda’s approach differs significantly from Toyota’s as they have publicly developed a method to combat dendrites, a significant threat to solid-state batteries. Dendrites, which grow with repeated usage and charging, can jeopardize the lifespan and safety of these batteries. Honda’s ingenious solution involves sandwiching polymer fabric between the electrolyte and the positive and negative electrodes, preventing dendrite growth.
Amidst this innovation, Honda stands independent, not relying on external collaborations like Toyota. Honda’s self-funded and self-driven research, as stated in a news release, positions them as a potential hidden powerhouse in the solid-state battery market.
Reading through Honda’s press releases, it’s evident that the company is not merely aiming for a new EV fleet but intends to revolutionize battery production. Surprisingly, Tesla, often associated with innovation, hasn’t led the charge in solid-state battery development, leaving Honda to take the reins. While Toyota is pursuing a similar path, Honda’s explicit commitment to a large-scale global market sets them apart.
The rivalry between Honda and Toyota in the solid-state battery race is palpable. Despite Toyota’s plans for a solid-state battery deployment in 2027, Honda seems poised for a similar timeline. Yet, both may find it strategic to collaborate to make a significant impact on the market.
Honda’s ambition to distribute solid-state batteries on a broad scale by the end of the decade faces challenges, particularly with Toyota’s alliance with Panasonic. Toyota’s extensive research, with 1,000 patent applications since 2012, may impact Honda’s plans. Nevertheless, Honda’s vision of delivering super EVs to customers by the end of the 2020s could reshape the electric vehicle market.
