📖 On November 19, 2010, around 3:45 in the afternoon, a massive explosion occurred deep inside the Pike River Coal mine, located in a mountain range in New Zealand’s South Island. More than an hour and a half later two ashen men stumbled from the mine’s entrance. Although they were safe, the two men were still terrified knowing that twenty nine of their co-workers remained trapped inside. The extreme high levels of carbon monoxide and the presence of fire in the mine led to unsurvivable conditions.
For five agonizing days the men’s families and friends waited and prayed.
