Indonesia’s 2024 Election and the Clean Energy Transition

In the upcoming Indonesian election, climate change and clean energy have emerged as significant issues. However, the proposals from the presidential hopefuls have been criticised for their lack of detail and ambition. One team emphasises transforming Indonesia into a renewable energy and bioenergy powerhouse, with plans that could potentially lead to increased deforestation due to biofuel production from palm oil. Another pair focuses on retiring coal power plants and increasing renewable energy’s share without setting clear targets. The third set of candidates proposes a slightly more ambitious renewable energy target by 2029 but faces skepticism over the feasibility and governance of their green and blue economy plans. Environmentalists are disappointed with the vague nature of these commitments, highlighting the need for concrete policies and a definitive roadmap towards sustainable energy practices in Indonesia
