KELLEYS ISLAND, Ohio (WTVG) – Kelleys Island Local School is the smallest district in the state of Ohio, with just seven students in total. But the impact of the project they’re about to begin will extend beyond this island.
“What we’re going to be doing is monitoring our climate, so of course different aspects of the weather,” Jackie Taylor, the Director of Kelleys Island School Field Station said. “ We’ll also be tracking how wildlife responds to our climate.”
To reinforce what signs and cues to look for, the staff installed a weather station on the backside of the school that kids can access online. That way they can see how different weather correlates with natural processes like spring blooms and migrations.
“Why are the monarch butterflies migrating later in November? Well, it’s warmer in November than say it was 30 – 40 years ago,” Taylor said.
