The Australian’s Environment Editor Graham Lloyd says taxpayers are “on the hook again” with Chris Bowen’s newest investment in the coal-fired steel industry.
Mr Bowen committed $137 million to BlueScope in funding an upgrade to a blast furnace at Port Kembla steelworks despite his push to phase out fossil fuels.
“BlueScope has made it pretty clear that this transition fossil fuel-free production is a bit of a pipe dream,” Mr Lloyd told Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“It’s still 20 years away at least.
“They are taking money now to really renovate the existing production process and they are going to stick with it for a long time to come.”
