SEARSPORT — The Maine House of Representatives voted Tuesday to reject the Governor’s proposal to build an offshore wind terminal on Sears Island in Searsport.

Governor Mills announced in February that her administration had chosen Sears Island for the proposed location of the project.

Ben Goodman, a spokesperson for Governor Mills, says this bill was introduced because of a small, man-made – not naturally-occurring – sand dune system on the Transportation parcel on Sears Island that was created by placement of a jetty.

“Without this bill, or commensurate language elsewhere, Maine would lose its once-in-a-generation opportunity to created hundreds of good-paying jobs for Maine people; to generate clean, home-grown energy that can stabilize electricity prices; and to protect our environment and the health of Maine people from the ravages of climate change,” Goodman said.

However, on Tuesday the House voted 80 to 65 to reject the proposed facility going on Sears Island.
