Man convicted of 18 felony sex charges in Chesapeake [Video]

The charges that Vernon Brooks, 64, was convicted of include 18 felonies of aggravated sexual battery and indecent liberties by a custodian.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A Chesapeake man was convicted of 18 felony sex charges related to the abuse of his granddaughter, the city’s Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office announced.  

The charges that Vernon Brooks, 64, was convicted of include 18 felonies of aggravated sexual battery, indecent liberties by a custodian and object sexual penetration of a child under 13. The crimes happened between Sept. 1, 2018, and Dec. 31, 2018.

Brooks lived with the child’s family when she was 11 years old and he repeatedly abused her, according to the city’s Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. She described in detail to the jury the multiple acts of sexual assault.

The maximum penalty for these offenses is two life sentences plus 230 years in the Virginia Department of Corrections.

Brooks is scheduled for sentencing on June 20.
