Liberal Senator Hollie Hughes slammed the “ridiculous” ban on nuclear energy which prevents it from even being discussed in Australia.
Coalition research has found widespread opposition to the proposals in regional areas earmarked for reactors.
Group research carried out in the Hunter Valley in NSW and the Latrobe Valley in Victoria found significant pushback to the proposed policies.
“A lot of these communities that are being spoken to are also about to get a whole lot of transmission lines and solar farms and wind turbines, and they don’t want either,” Ms Hughes said.
“We have got a lot of people who don’t understand how the technology has evolved.
“They all think it’s Chernobyl-style, big reactors which it’s not.”
