MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – After nearly three dozen people were arrested Wednesday morning as UW-Madison Police Department officers removed tents from campus, more tents were set up on Library Mall.
UWPD Executive Director of Communications Marc Lovicott confirmed Wednesday afternoon that 34 people were arrested, and the majority of those arrested were released with no citations issued. Four people were booked into the Dane County Jail on various charges, including attempting to disarm a police officer, resisting arrest, attempted escape and battery to a police officer.
One of the individuals arrested is affiliated with the university, UWPD noted.
Lovicott explained that the department arrived at Library Mall around 7 a.m. and issued several warnings asking for tents to be removed because they are not permitted on campus. Camping on university grounds is a violation of Chapter 18 of the UW System Administrative Code, UW officials stated earlier in the week.
