PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – Portland on Wednesday passed an ordinance to ban gas-powered leaf blowers starting in 2026.

The ordinance will prohibit people from using or hiring contractors who use gas-powered leaf blowers between January 1 and September 30 each year.

For Malik Hopkins of Hopkins PDX Services, the decision makes him nervous about the financial impacts of going fully electric.

“You got do a lot of alterations to your trailer to hold those batteries, and support those charging stations because those batteries don’t last that long,” said Hopkins.”Making it a little bit more difficult for us sometimes because of the costs of certain equipment.”

Starting costs for new gas-powered leaf blowers can set you back $500 to $700 and electric leaf blowers might be about the same. But you’ll have to drop another several hundred on a battery.
