State Sen. Brian Chavez, in a Plain Dealer article Sunday, May 5 (“Taxpayers paying to clean up someone else’s mess”) about fracking in Ohio and releases of its grime into the atmosphere, says that carbon dioxide in the air is no bad thing. He points out that when dinosaurs were around, carbon in the atmosphere contributed to their size and that there was more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Sen. Chavez is right in saying that carbon is a good thing, and that it contributes significantly to life on the planet. What he doesn’t mention is that those dinosaurs were not pulling carbon out of the earth to provide the energy needs of 8 billion people, and that carbon dioxide released into the air traps heat — and that we humans, besides our usual exhalations of carbon dioxide, have been sending increasing amounts of carbon dioxide into the air since the dawn of the industrial age. …
