Work to restore a major gas pipeline that sprang a leak and caught fire in central Queensland is set to begin, with industry asked to ration its use of the natural resource until it is fixed.

The fire burned from a section of the Queensland Gas Pipeline from about 7.20am to 4.30pm on Tuesday after the leak sprung at Bauhinia, west of Rockhampton.

The event prompted an emergency response, with firefighters attempting to manage the blaze and operators setting up an exclusion zone.

The cause of the leak, which did not result in any injuries, remains undetermined.

Social media footage showed fire spewing from the pipeline in a bushland area.

The company operating the pipeline, Jemena, said planning for restoration works at the site between Rolleston Compressor Station and Oombabeer will begin on Wednesday.
