States and territories want four-year forecasts on their shares of GST, helping them secure budget bottom lines under possible changes to the annual carve-up of the $90 billion tax after angry pushback over the current system.

This masthead can reveal that during a meeting of the nation’s treasurers on Friday, states and territories pressed for an agreement to make the entire Commonwealth Grants Commission process more transparent and easier to understand following strident criticism from NSW and Queensland.

The angry debate over the annual allocation of GST between the states and territories erupted last week after the commission’s most recent report recommended cuts in Queensland and NSW and an unexpected $3.7 billion boost to Victoria.

NSW, which lost $1.6 billion compared to what it had been forecasting for the 2024-25 financial year, was particularly surprised by grants commission decisions.
