Readers respond: Prayer flags show hope for climate [Video]

Created with just scissors, a needle and embroidery thread, handmade prayer flags at Havurah Shalom call attention to the climate crisis we face.

The union of art and science in this exhibit helps us understand possible climate solutions. The flags represent the top 60 solutions to climate change, prioritized from the well-documented work of over 5,000 scientists.

Each prayer flag has a small plaque beside it, estimating conservatively the amount of CO2 prevented from reaching our atmosphere if we work toward that solution’s goal. The exhibit also describes the health improvements and cost savings made possible by each solution.

At Havurah, we have been quite successful leading tours of the exhibit, explaining the hope and the science. Many viewers have taken the opportunity to create their own handmade flags; others take fabric home to make flags. We were surprised at this enthusiasm; it represents a prayer to ourselves that the …
