Satellite measuring methane in the atmosphere launches | BBC News

A satellite has been launched into orbit, which will track where there are high levels of greenhouse gas methane in light reflected from earth.

It will orbit the earth 15 times a day, tracking methane emissions leaking from oil and gas facilities.

Methane gas is believed by scientists to be a major contributor to global warming, because it traps in heat – and the data captured by the satellite will be used to generate a map highlighting hotspots around the world.

It is hoped that this data will help companies spot leaks, and with the data being made publicly available, make sure that any leaks get repaired.
