Springfield Fire Department says to keep an eye on your childs toys with lithium-ion batteries [Video]

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – An overheated lithium-ion battery in a remote-control car caused a recent Springfield house fire. But firefighters say this isn’t the first time they’ve seen this.

Within the last six months, the Springfield Fire Department has responded to three house fires caused by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Fire officials are calling this a rapidly growing problem.

The division chief for Battlefield Fire says it’s not just Springfield dealing with lithium battery fires.

“It doesn’t matter if your rural or city based or volunteer or career combination department, most departments have had to deal with this at least once,” said Battlefield Fire Division Chief, Shane Anderson.

These are the pictures from the Springfield house on East Cambridge Street earlier this month when the toy car caught on fire.

Almost all handheld devices like Phones, Laptops, Computers, and Tablets are powered by lithium ion rechargeable batteries.
