LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) – The Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy is encouraging private well owners who requested free nitrate sample kits to test drinking water to return those kits to the state.
The kits were available from November through the first of March. In total, the state says over 4,500 well owners requested kits. Those expire after 90 days.
Returning the kit, the state says, is a proactive tool private well owners can use to learn about nitrate concentration and make informed decisions regarding their drinking water. Data collected from the sampling effort will be used in a statewide study NDEE is in the process of conducting. They say the kits must be received as soon as possible by the Public Health Environmental Lab to ensure the data is included.
Free sample kits are no longer available, but they can be obtained any time through the Public Health Environmental Lab. The kits are $16, plus the cost of postage.
