A study shows longer allergy seasons are caused by more freeze-free days each year. 11Alive gets tips on how to prepare.

ATLANTA — A recent study released by Climate Central reveals a concerning trend: allergy seasons are becoming longer, with children bearing the brunt of its effects. The study, which examines the correlation between climate change and allergen production, indicates that the average allergy season in Metro Atlanta has extended by approximately 33 days.

According to experts, the primary driver behind this phenomenon is increased carbon pollution, which contributes to heightened allergen production. Dr. Joanna Dolgoff from Wellstar Health System notes a noticeable uptick in allergy-related symptoms among her patients, particularly in children. Symptoms such as congestion, sore throats and watery eyes have become more prevalent, she said. 

In response to these findings, Dr. Dolgoff offered practical advice for parents looking to mitigate their children’s allergy symptoms.
