The Problem with Ammonia-Coal Co-firing in Southeast Asia

Ammonia coal co-firing, a technology to reduce carbon emissions from power plants, faces scrutiny in Southeast Asia. While it can cut greenhouse gases, concerns arise over its environmental impact, notably the release of nitrogen oxides (NOx), contributing to air pollution.
The technology’s safety, high retrofitting costs, and energy-intensive ammonia production pose challenges for developing regions.
Moreover, reliance on imported ammonia may increase energy dependency and economic vulnerability.
As Southeast Asia aims to transition away from fossil fuels, investing in renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and hydroelectric power could offer a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative.
