Turkey’s $200 Billion Dam Will POWER All Thrace in Southeast Europe

Presently, Turkey is witnessing the execution of several significant hydropower ventures. In today’s discussion, we’ll delve into two of these notable projects. Firstly, we’ll explore the ongoing construction of a hydroelectric dam along the Kuraki River in the province of Arphen, nestled within the Black Sea region. Additionally, we’ll examine the ambitious endeavor undertaken by the Turkish to erect the largest suspension bridge globally. The construction of the expansive hydroelectric power facility is nearing completion. Regrettably, upon its culmination, the town of Yusufeli, situated approximately 8 kilometers or 5 miles from the dam’s location, will be submerged underwater. The history of humanity is replete with examples of constructing water-retaining structures for agricultural purposes. However, the scale and sophistication of contemporary dams starkly contrast with their predecessors. Modern dams stand as marvels of engineering and technological prowess, featuring colossal cement walls equipped with sluices and gates, spanning rivers. Remarkably, the height of a dam correlates with its reservoir capacity, exemplified by the Yusufeli Dam towering at 270 meters, poised to become Turkey’s tallest and the world’s seventh highest concrete arch dam. Commencing construction on December 21, 2012, the Yusufeli Dam marks the second-largest installment within the extensive Kuraki River development scheme, encompassing a plan for 13 dams, of which two are operational, and two are in progress. Primarily designated for hydroelectric power generation, the dam will accommodate a 540-megawatt power plant. However, contentious debates surround the project, concerning its anticipated ecological impact on the reservoir’s biodiversity and the displacement of local inhabitants. Concerning the hydroelectric power plant, it is slated to yield 1.9 billion kilowatt-hours, boasting a cumulative capacity of 558 megawatts, sufficient to meet the energy demands of approximately 650,000 individuals.

The newly constructed hydroelectric dam in the northeastern Turkish province of Arfan is projected to contribute over $221 million annually to the economy. This dam, entirely engineered by Turkish professionals, stands approximately 70 kilometers or 44 miles southwest of Arvind. Named Yusuf Ali, it takes the form of a double-curved arch dam, boasting a towering height of 270 meters from its base and 223 meters from the lowest point of the riverbed. Its crest stretches 490 meters in length and 15 meters in width, constructed from a staggering 4 million cubic meters of concrete—equivalent to the material required for erecting 50,000 houses. Positioned at an elevation of 715 meters above sea level, the dam’s reservoir operates at normal levels between 710 and 712 meters, with a minimum depth of 670 meters. Covering an area of 33 square kilometers, the reservoir holds a total capacity of 2 billion cubic meters, with an active storage capacity of 1 billion cubic meters.
