Nine Democrats in the General Assembly representing districts in the Richmond area have issued a public statement expressing their opposition to the construction of a gas-fired electric power plant planned by Dominion Energy for Chesterfield County.

The legislators assert that the development of the plant is inconsistent with efforts to reduce carbon emissions and expand the deployment of wind and solar resources to comply with the 2020 Virginia Clean Economy Act, which calls for Dominion to produce 100% of its power from renewable resources by 2045. The legislators are mistaken in their opposition. Their arguments are not supported by the facts.

Dominion Energy has a long-established legal obligation to provide reliable electric service. Its customers depend on and demand reliable electric service. Renewable resources, themselves, cannot provide reliable electric service.

Electricity, unlike oil and gas and other forms of energy, cannot be stored in significant amounts. It must be produced by generators and supplied to customers in amounts precisely equal to …
