JOHANNESBURG – One of the most important reforms to break Eskom’s monopoly on the production of power was passed by the National Assembly this week.

It makes provision for the establishment of a state-owned Transmission Company that will create a platform where electricity can be bought and sold.

Eskom will make some of the power but the barriers for private players to sell into the grid are set to come right down.

For now many South Africans – especially the poor who have not yet installed solar panels – rely on Eskom for their power.

Eskom continues to struggle to meet demand. board chair, Mteto Nyati, who was appointed in October last year speaks on finding solutions to the problem that is Eskom.
